A wonderful if modest night was held on World Aids Day, Saturday evening 1st December 2007, at a reception organised by Plymouth Pride Forum at Plymouth Universities new landmark Arts Faculty building "The Roland Levinsky" at Drakes Circus in Plymouth, Devon. Entitled a "Celebration of Life", the event was a launch vehicle for Plymouth Pride Forums new inter active forums website to aid communications between LGBT individuals, communities and groups on the south west peninsula in Plymouth Devon and Kernow/Cornwall. Funds were raised on the night to benefit The Eddystone Trust , who work so tirelessly in the south west to promote safer sex, and educate and raise consciousness on matters surrounding the HIV Aids issue as well as supporting those living with and affected by the disease.
We were entertained by Quip a local LGBT performance art group based in the city who came on board at the last minute and provided us with some amazing musical entertainment and in particular a wonderful acoustic rendition of "Back To Black " the Amy Winehouse song , every one was taken aback at the amazing rendition of it by Quip which was truly wonderful.
The evening culminated in a candle lit vigil and a two minutes silence on the neon lit steps of The Roland Levinsky Building. It is hoped that the event will be organic and grow in size from year to year, perhaps including a Winter Pride Festival next year or in years to come.
The Faculty of Arts at Plymouth University was most generous in its support of the occasion and hospitable towards us at every level and the new architectural award winning premises loaned themselves superbly to the event. It was a joy to be the first group in the city to avail itself of the architects and designers remit to make it an open and inclusive building serving the communities of the city, Plymouth Pride Forum recognised and accepted the invitation wholeheartedly, claiming it for the future as LGBT communities space. |
